Break out the razor blades!

I just watched High Fidelity and decided I needed to make a top 5 list of my own. Everybody and dey mama seems to be putting out a 'saddest songs of all time' list, so here we are. Although I have to change it up a bit, I need 15 spots rather than 5 and I can’t be responsible for deciding which song is sadder than the next… way too much pressure. Therefore, my list is in no particular order. Every song will equally make you want to slit your wrists or paint your nails black, smooth your hair over your face in a sideways fashion, avoid the sun like the plague and cry all day.

Check out a fulI video playlist on
HimboTube, or partial playlists on Imeem and Project Playlist (Imeem and Project Playlist didn’t have every song on my list – thank baby Jesus for YouTube).

Okay, here it is:

1. Pacific Coast Highway (Courtney Love)
This song used to make me cry every time I heard it.

2. Early Winter (Gwen Stefani)
This song used to make me cry every time I heard it. I’m starting to see a pattern. You might remember I blogged about this early on, t'was one of my first blogs.

3. Maps (The Yeah Yeah Yeahs)
Oh! Such an awesome song!

4. I'm a Fool for Wanting You (Frank Sinatra)
I recently discovered this song. Heartbreaking.

5. Godspeed (Dixie Chicks)
This song makes me cry like a little bitch. I have a DVD of The Dixie Chicks performing this song live at The Kodak (I added it to the playlist on HimboTube) and Natalie explains the story behind the song. Keep tissues nearby.

6. Mad World (Gary Jules)
Tears for Fears originally released this but I like the Gary Jules version mo beta.

7. Last Kiss (J Frank Wilson & The Cavaliers)
I’ve loved this song since I was a little tiny Himbo, I was known as Himbitito then. Cool song. Totally sad.

8. Nothing Compares 2 U (Sinead O’Connor) [not to be confused with Shanaydo Connor]
I couldn’t resist including this song. Ain’t no shame in my game. You know you all agree… don’t front.

9. Maybe (Janis Joplin)
This doesn’t even need an explanation. I love The Janis.

10. My December (Linkin Park)
Such a sad song. Really hard to find though! In my search, I discovered that Josh Groban covered it. It actually wasn't bad.

11. My Immortal (Evanescence)
Awesome, awesome song. I think at one point, I had every Evanescence and Linkin Park song in existence, on this list. I had to limit them to 1 each.

12. I Will Remember You (Sarah McLachlan)
I know, so obvious but you can’t leave it off of this list. It’s totally appropriate.

13. Everybody Hurts (R.E.M.)
Right...

14. Landslide (both, Stevie Nicks’ original and Dixie Chicks’ cover)
It was so hard for me to chose one version for this list. I think I chose Stevie because she wrote it and Dixie Chicks already made the list with #5 (Godspeed).

15. Don't Speak (No Doubt)
Seriously. Don’t even try to front. You know I’m right.

**UPDATE 12-27-2008**
16. I'd Rather Go Blind (Etta James):
I had to add this to the list after seeing Beyoncé's portrayal of Etta James on Cadillac Records.

3 Queens and a... errr... make that 4

I watched YouTube Live all the way through, yesterday. I liked it. Here are my 3 favorite moments, provided in the video playlist at the bottom. Just push play.

1. (The little queen) Fred sings at YouTube: Fred is the 6 y/o ADHD-suffering alter ego of 15 y/o Lucas Cruikshank. Fred's channel is the most subscribed channel on youtube! He gets more hits than your crackwhore mother. Play the video and prepare for luxurious awesomeness! You can find more Fredisodes (fred episodes) @ HimboTube, as well as his channel.

2. (The real queen) Queen Rania of Jordan: She's so l.u.x.u.r.i.o.u.s.! This queen is so smart. She was presented with the YouTube Visionary Award for her channel which is dedicated to breaking down stereotypes of the Arab and Muslim world and to bridging the East/West divide. I think I love her. Btw, isn't she such a hottie?! The video is her acceptance speech, in which she spoof David Letterman's Top 10 lists. Hilarious!

3. (The pop queen) Katy Perry opens the show: She rocked out with her cock rooster out! Such a diva... in the prelude she envokes another queen, RuPaul, in the Supermodel video [Chantay. Chantay. Sashay!]

4. (The drag queen) RuPaul, Supermodel (You Better Work): Although RuPaul didn't grace the YTLive with her luxuriosity, I thought it'd be fun to show the video right after Katy Perry's performance. You know... for good measure.

Sleepless in Anaheim

I came across this really cool article. All of the answers I’ve been looking for… laid out. Don’t trip, I’m not gonna try to convert you to Scientology or The Plan. It is an article that touches on the differences between night people and morning people (or rather, cool people and evil people).

I am a night person. The rest of America… morning people.

Getting to work on time everyday has been a little bit of a challenge lately. I’m on a modified schedule until the end of the year, so I start an hour later, which is at 9:30am. Let’s just say I don’t get to work right at 9:30am every morning, and leave it that. No need to get specific.

The article talks about some things you can do to change your natural circadian rhythm, which I have attempted, but its no work for Himbo, okay.

It’s okay, I have a solution. If you cant beat'em… move to Spain.

You see, the Spanish know wassup.

9:00am-ish: Wakeup and head to work, but not before stopping for breakfast, which is really just an espresso and maybe a pastry.

3:00pm-ish: SIESTA TIME! Take at least 3 hours for a looong lunch and A NAP.

…Dude!! That’s brilliant!

5:00pm-ish: (And not a minute sooner): Mosey on back to work and eventually close shop.

9:00pm rolls around: Eh… we should start thinking about dinner.

11:00pm-ish: Dinner time, which really means: go to a bunch of different bars and restaurants for tapas y vino!

1:00am-ish (optional): Party like a rockstar til 6 in the mornin!

Notice how Spanish time ends with “ish”. Nothing’s “sharp”. That’s how I roll.

I’m part Spanish; so I inherited my circadian rhythm. T'was passed down to me, t'sin in me genes. I need to remember that so I can tell my boss the next time I’m reminded of my official start time.

…or just move to Spain before I get fired.

Olé,

What's up with Blogger lately?

Dude... is anyone else experiencing the same challenges with Blogger or am I just slow [Don't answer that!]?

Lately, when I post, the formatting has been a bit off, especially when I use the scheduling feature to auto-post at a later time.

Hmm... something to research tonight.

Give me feedback if you have any.

Mahalo!

I'm it

I’ve been tagged by Bon Don @ "Who Throws a Cupcake? Honestly”?

Here goes:

1. Were you named after anyone?
Yes, although my dad has the same name, we were both named after my great grandfather. My great grandmother asked my mom if she would name me after her hubby. He used to be a cop waaay back in the day and was killed on the job.

But do you wanna hear a secret?

Of course you do.

I heard that there's a conspiracy behind all that drama, but no one will tell me what it is. Bastards!

2. Do you still have your tonsils?
Yup.

3. Would you bungee jump?
Nope, I’m Mexican.

4. What is your favorite cereal?
I’m not big on cereal. Right now I have some Kashi Go Lean stuff in my pantry but if I had what I actually wanted, I think I’d have Pops.

5. Do you untie your shoes when you take them off?
Nah not anymore.

6. What is your favorite ice cream?
I’m also not big on ice cream but right now I have this mango ice cream in my fridge. It’s pretty good.

7. What is the first thing you notice about people?
Teeth, then hair, then everything else :)

8. What is your least favorite thing about yourself?
I forgot how to not give a fuck. I was very confident and outgoing, but everything changed when I came to The OC.

9. What was the last thing you ate?
I baked chocolate/mint swirl cookies for Bon Don and her mommy, Sra. Fernandez.

10. What are you listening to right now?
Right now… in the background, Bon Don and Sra. Fernandez are watching Six Feet Under [haha! They’re hooked. YES!]. Otherwise, Pink!'s Funhouse.

11. Last movie you watched?
Blonde It’s a Marilyn Monroe biopic. Netflix it if you can. It’s sooo good!

12. What did you dream about last night?
I’ll never tell…

…well, to be honest. I don’t remember dreaming about anything last night.

13. What book are you reading?
As soon as Bon Don returns it, I’ll finish reading A Town Like Paris. Lol Bon Don, don’t trip, I kept your David Sedaris books for ever too.

14. Summer or winter?
Winter, but only in sunny Southern California because it’s not thaaat cold. I love winter wardrobe. The scarves, wool coats, sweaters, etc. Me loves it!

15. Do you have any special talents?
Besides having luxurious hair? I’m bilingual, fluent in Spanish and English. I used to be very artistic, I was nominated into GATE school and attended for a couple of years. Weird ‘cause now I’m an Analyst… I look at data all day.

Autumn Skies in The OC

Above: view of The Arena @ the Anaheim Convention Center

I couldn't resist! Had to post this shot. I hitched a ride home from work with Bon Don yesterday. We had a date, Bon Don was bringing din-din and I was hosting. The plan was to watch Six Feet Under but we were having so much fun, we never got around to it.

As we headed out of the parking structure...

P.S. our parking structure is sorta awesome, it has views of Disneyland on one side, the Anaheim Convention Center on another side, and a city view on the third. Only half of the top floor (P5) is covered.

...we noticed yet another amazing sunset.

Bon Don: Himbo, you wanna drive up to P5 and take pictures of the sky for our blogs?

Himbo:
Ch-YEAH!

Bon Don's car:
SCAAA... RRREEEAAAACH!

Himbo:
Ouch, betch! My head hit the window!

Bon Don:
Hee hee hee. Wait! Is my window okay?

We got up there just in time to catch a few shots, me on my cell phone camera and Bon Don on her xxx nudy pix taker [mhmm... the girl is freaky deaky, lemme tell you. But you didn't hear that from 'cause I aint one to gossip.]

Btw, everyone who works at The Hotel, all 1,000 employees, know what Bon Don's car looks like. If they see her coming, they run for safety. During lunch, I always hear people talking about how fast she drives through the parking structure. Haters. They just mad 'cause they aint got her mad drivin' skillz.

Here are a few more pix, if you're interested:

Sunset Boulevard

Sometimes I get little reminders of how good I have it:

I live a couple of blocks from The Hotel so it only takes me about 15 minutes to walk home. In that short period, since we've switched back from daylight savings time, I have the privilege of experiencing sunset, everyday.

The weather has been just right, too. Cool but not cold, and since the latter part of last week we've been experiencing some mild Santa Ana's, carrying with them a sort of magical vibe.

Clock strikes 5, I unbutton my collar, loosen my tie, throw on my coat and turn on my iPod shuffle.

My route home is lined with trees coiled with little lights, on both sides of the boulevard.

Jealous? You should be :P

Update: Yes I did!

In a recent post, I mentioned I broke out the champagne when President-elect Obama was announced.

Um, yeah, well, Himbo got fu**ed up! I ended up getting all pedo.

[pedo: Espanol for shitfaced]

The sad part is, I was hungover the next day at work, but I didn't realize it. I just couldn't figure out why I was in such an eff'd up mood.

That's all. Thought you should know. Cheers!

My name is Himbo and I approve this message

I know it might be overkill so I think this will be my last post about the election:

As mentioned in my last post, I registered via rockthevote.com, what I didn't mention is that I actually attempted to register via official government website but it didn't work!

P.S. government websites are archaic.

After a quick Google search, I came up on rockthevote and registered in like 5 minutes.

Today, I received this email message from "Heather":

Dear Himbo,

You did it.

Yesterday, more young people voted than have ever voted in American history. 24 million young voters.

You took our country into your own hands-- you got registered, you got your friends registered, and you turned out to the polls on November 4th.

You picked our next president.

I can’t tell you what last night meant to me, to all of us here at Rock the Vote. For 18 years we’ve been telling politicians that if they only took the time and energy to talk to us, to engage us, and to take us seriously, that young people would get involved and vote.

President-Elect Obama did precisely that. He responded to your concerns and questions. He found you on the Internet. He organized on your campuses and in your communities.

And he won because of you. I don’t say any of this because President-Elect Obama is a Democrat, but because he ran a campaign as a democrat, with a small “d.” He ran a campaign that reached out to the young and the traditionally disenfranchised, he organized one-on-one and across the nation, and he talked to and with us about the issues we care about. He ran a campaign based on the democratic premise that our country is run by the people and for the people.

Congratulations to each of you. You made history yesterday. Your hard work, your dedication, and your votes will go down in the books as a momentous event.

And this is just the beginning. Yesterday, we showed them our power. Today, we start work on using that strength to make real change for our country.

I can’t wait.

Yes we did!

I feel so good right now, overwhelmed with hope and optimism! The best candidate for President of the United States of America has just been elected into office. To think, just a couple of weeks ago I wasn’t registered to vote. Like many other Latinos, before this landmark election, I hadn’t yet registered to vote. It wasn’t until a couple of days before the deadline, when my friend asked me if I was registered, I answered “Nope, I never got around to it. Barack’s gonna get California anyway”. He wasn’t having any of that - so that night I went online to rockthevote.com and registered just in time.

I wasn’t sure if my registration got to its destination in time because I hadn’t received my voter information card, but yesterday I went straight for my mailbox and there it was, that beautiful yellow card with my name and voting location. I felt so relieved and privileged. Privileged, you see, because, Sunday, Reina_B and TALOM invited me to watch The Secret Life of Bees, I came along not really knowing what the movie was about but hey I’m always up for a movie. There’s a scene where Jennifer Hudson’s character gets beaten for attempting to register to vote. Right then it hit me, reminding me that the right to vote was something that many people fought for, some even died. Had I been alive at that time, I wouldn’t be allowed to vote because of my skin color.

Suddenly, I started paying attention to the campaign even though I pretty much knew I’d be voting for Barack. If I had any doubt before, it was all gone after watching his 30 minute commercial, I was left feeling compelled to get this man in that chair and let him do work.

Today, as I sat alone in my apartment, on the edge of my seat watching CNN, biting my nails and anxiously text messaging the same friend who pushed me to vote, a political analyst started analyzing the voter data. He stated that the two most influential segments to this election were young voters and Latino voters, both heavy with 1st time voters. This shook things up in some states; states that everyone had projected to go to McCain surprised everyone by going to Obama. That correlation is so incredibly vindicating because I’m a young voter, a Latino voter and a 1st time voter. It’s probably the first statistic that I am proud to be associated with,
I’m so thankful for the kick in the ass that got me to vote. But I am even more proud of an America that was smart enough to chose the right person, for no reason other than being the best man for the job. I was left with no choice but to bust out the champagne.

To a better, brighter tomorrow... Cheers!

-Himbo
